Nunavut

Do you think that Inuit's are happy to have been given the province Nunavut by the Canadian Government? Why or why not?

I think that the inuits are not happy because they are being pushed around by politics. They have only one bit of land and there might not be aa lot of animals there. I think that the inuits are kind of happy because they have at least some land but they are not satisfied because they have little land and little space.I thik that Canada should be more respectful towards inuits because they were the first people in Canada.

I think that some Inuits were happy and some not. Some could have thought they liked their culture, but the children might not like it. The children might complain that the weather is too cold, or that they like forks rather than eating with hands. Some adults might think differently b/c they would be used to the weather, and might think that their tradition should be brought back and restored.

I believe that the Inuits are not happy because they at first roamed all of Canada but now, they are stuck in a small area and they can't do anything about it just because they are Inuits and not French or Canadian. This makes me realize that sometimes, we are not thinking-no, not caring-about how others feel and how we would feel if we were in that situation; we only think about how our lives are so much better than the Inuits and the Inuits are stuck to some confined space unlike us so the Inuits are OBVIOUSLY not happy.

Is it possible that some can be happy while others are not and are upset? Could it be that they might have been worse off if they didn't have a place to call there own? Think about the idea that if they always lived there in the cold North of Canada, they are used to that land so now they have land that they can officially call their own. Or is it possible that they now feel that they are trapped in that land and can't roam free and feel that their traditions are only accepted in Nunavut.

I think that the Inuits are sad and happy. I think this because they finally have a place to call home instead of somewhere else but they also didn't want to leave their homes and they way they lived. They liked their lives and how it was before. Also they have to live in a small area when before they could roam around whenever and wherever they want. They use to hunt themselves and made clothing out of skin but now they probably can't. They might have a place to live, roof over their heads, and food but they don't have their lifestyles and that is very important too. To have the life you wanted to love and how to live your life. This is what I think the Inuits feel having Nunavut, Canada.

From my prior knowledge, I know the Inuits were eager to get their own land, especially the Elders who had not lost touch with their traditons. So when they got Nunavut in 1999, I believe that the Inuits were happy at first to have their culture restored again. However, the Inuits most likely realized their mistake. Even now, the Inuits still have food shipped to them from other parts of Canada, and they still work in factories and mines. The trace that Canada had left behind was still there. The Inuits wanted to stay in touch with their culture, but while they attempted to do that, the things other Canadians had taught them still weren't forgotten. Nunavut is said to be only 1/2 of the Inuit population, showing that still Canadians control the Inuit. I think that if they haven't realized it now, since it is only their fourteenth year with their own provice, the Inuit will realize sooner or later that they are not happy. Plus, the Inuit may be proud to have land they can call their own, but it still isn't truly their own.

I beg to differ with everybody and i concur with everybody. IT actually depends on the people. Each person has a different thought just as we all do. one person couldve have already adapted to cold before getting nunavut and they are just happy they have their own land however a person who has not adapted to ice dont care. I also now realize that i have the same idea AS SHAQIB A|/-|m

I think that the Inuits aren't happy to have been given the province Nunavut by the Canadian Government. First off, the Inuits were the first people to have arrived in Canada, so they had the right to go anywhere they wanted. Because of the Canadian Government, the Inuits are given limited land to live on. The Canadian Government shouldn't have the right to limit the Inuit's freedom of residency, because the constituents that currently live there, came later. In other words, Canada was once the Inuits' property, as well as a homeland, and is now just country with a small portion given to them. It is like saying that I found a house, and I decided to make it my home, but later, other people came, and forced me to give up the house and only live in one room. How unfair! I see no justice with the Inuits.

Naneil, i beg to differ with you, when you say "I think that the inuits are not happy because they are being pushed around by politics. They have only one bit of land and there might not be aa lot of animals there. I think that the inuits are kind of happy because they have at least some land but they are not satisfied because they have little land and little space.I thik that Canada should be more respectful towards inuits because they were the first people in Canada." i beg to differ with you, because Canada was as respectful as can be. they at least named them the government, so they should be really happy.
And I think that the Inuit are happy, because they are called "Nunavut by the Canadian Government" and being Canada's government, they should really be happy. It is not like you can be a country's government all the time.

Unknown said...

Afm, THE INUIT SHOULD BE HAPPY. YOU HAVE TO THINK OF REALITY. THEY ARE GOVERNMENT, WHICH IS SO MUCH MORE BETTER THAN JUST ROAMING Canada. THEY CAN ACTUALLY CONTROL CANADA. IT IS NOT LIKE THEY HAVE NO FREEDOM AT ALL BECAUSE THEY DO. THEY CAN GO ANYWHERE IN CANADA AND NOT BE ARRESTED FOR GOING THERE, UNLESS YOU WERENT SUPPOSED TO. SO YEAH, INUITS SHOULD BE HAPPY!!!

Unknown said...

I think that the Inuits should be happy...as a person who just got hit in the head with a stapler a million times in the head, then got poked in the eye with a sharp pencil. The Inuit call Canada "Our Mother", so how would you feel about losing your mother? They even lost all their traditions! They got pulled into politics, and now they have food IMPORTED! Imported! Before they took out their bows and arrows and even their harpoons and then got to whaling. They lost their traditions and basically their LIFE! Imagine one great-grandfather. Imagine how agitated he would be because it would be no use to pass on the culture and folk tales. He can't pass on the source of power; knowledge. So obviously they won't be glad to hear a majestic Inuit story and then not understand the syncretism of it.

I also beg to differ with people who say "They roamed all of Canada." Correction. They roamed all of Canada...beyond the Arctic Tree Line. Not a lot of space.

HOwever AFM while they were roaming
Canada, i know that they have "Crossed Bridges of Ice" in their paths and soon they adapted to cold and they feel that we might as well work with it and some people are thankful that they can have land where when the food is imported they can have the chances to take a greater amount of food since they are only few people when it comes to population. Furthermore Some Inuits in this case kids complained but they had also enjoy the great amount of food even if they eat with hand. Shaqib, We for the most part eat food with our hands so you cant really say that they complained unless you are connecting from your life which now i can see that some picky kids want everything like: i wanted the hershey not the milky way. why did you get me this blaw blaw blaw.

You would have to be more than one to understand where the inuits live. Honestly i think that there can be different sides but most of you people view it in one side while you dont TRY to rotate it revealing the other vertices proving that point. you guys look at one side but if you look at that side too long its vertex will turn dull and you wont have a side that you can use its point since YOU dont know what the side is about. all in all, THEY ARE HAPPY AND SAD, THAT IS MY CLAIM

I actually beg to differ for those who are saying that the Inuit's are not happy to have been given the province Nunavut by the Canadian Government because they actually are happy. The Canadian Government has gave the Inuit's proper care, medication, and transportation. Plus, I remember in the text that More than half of Canada's people live in Nunavut. This shows that the place that they live, Nunavut is HUGE because many people live there. Anyway, Naniel the Inuit's are not being pushed around with the politics but the politics are helping them a lot. The Inuit's should be happy that they have a place called a home because that's were they spreaded their culture. Hi My Name Is... you can't say that the Inuit's aren't eager to live in Nunavut because they found land in 1999 and we never got news if they still don't follow their culture. The Inuit's are happy with what they have. I also remember in the video that the children were forced to go to school so this shows that the Inuits are trying to spread their culture by letting their kids learn about their life style. Plus, most things happen in reality not always in books. So yes, the Inuit's are happy to be given the province Nunavut by the Canadian Government.

Yes, it's true that in Nunavut the weather is cold Shaqib, but the Inuits have now been living there for 14 years and they are still living there. But they have been adapting to the weather and thy must have thick blood otherwise most of Canada's population would have been wiped out. Nunavut is where the Inuit's tradition/culture began and they're not going to move from there cause they have adapted to the weather.

Shayan, you are so right, but think about it. They are the GOVERNMENT, and they should be happy about that. Yeah they lost their land, but wouldn't it feel good to control Canada? They can make Canada let them do all the traditions they have lost, and renew them again. The grandfathers that cant share any folk tales, could still share, because there is not any law not even one, that says you cant share your cultural traditions and folk tales with your children or grandchildren. so if you think about it, you are totally wrong with that message.

Ummm.... Shaqib, you are so wrong! The Inuit are used to the cold! The Inuit have thick blood. Next time just listen to Mr. Alper before you say something or write something in this blog.

I beg to differ with you Lamiya, because in the text, it said that half of the Inuit population lived in Nunavut. Lamiya, just because the Inuit's have been living in Nunavut for "14 years", doesn't mean that the Inuits have adapted to their lifestyle, again. After all, the canadian influence on the Inuits were pretty recent. It must be hard for them to change because they were forced to learn the French ways and give up their own. The Inuits may have adapted to the harsh enviroment, just like their ancestors had,but the Inuits are still shaky about their tradition and culture falling apart. In short, the Inuit's can not be happy.

Unknown said...

Syed, I actually beg to differ with you because they atleast have a home. Their culture wasn't broken down because they still live in Nunavut. Kids are forced to school to learn about their ancestry and thier culture. Plus on Thursday, Mr. Alper said that different people adapt to the weather so the Inuits most likely have thick blood to let them be warm in the winter. Plus, the Inuits are prepared all year round since they live in a harsh weather.

Unknown said...

I beg to differ with you, lamiya, because the Inuit's culture wasn't torn down directly, but rather, piece by piece.By making the little Inuits (the children) unknown about their own culture, the French were gradually converting the new generation to become oe of them. Also, how long would it take for the seals to become extinct?Since the seals are the Inuits' favorite food source,it is more likely for the seals to try to make themselves at home,in the Inuits stomach! Pursuing this further, where exactly IS their liberty? They can't even spread their culture anywhere else besides their small island.I concur with u when u say that "they atleast have a home." However, before their home was all over Canada, not just on a small island. It's like saying that I owned a country, but was later forced to give it up and keep merely an island. When I would say, " How unfair!," they would say "atleast you've got a home, lad."

The Whatever Girl said...

I also beg to differ with you Lamiya because though the Inuit are restoring their culture, they aren't following their traditions or beliefs. No matter how much they learn, it is much different from saying then actualy doing it. Plus, Lamiya, you said the Inuit children were FORCED to learn about their culture, meaning some of them didn't want to learn about their culture, while others weren't happy. If you haven't noticed, Lamiya, the Inuit do prepare all year round, but with the help of others. Their culture has gone hundreds of thousands of years back starting with the Thule people, but since the 1900s has begun, the culture was gone.

The Whatever Girl said...

Plus, Rohan(a.k.a. I am crane), I beg to differ with you when you say that the Inuit could take over Canada and that'll help with their traditions. That doesn't help at all because taking over Canada will actually make them forget their traditions even more. This would happen because they would have an entire country to control who all have different traditions than the Inuit, so they would forget their own eventually.

Nur Rohan Siddique, they are only in control of not Canada, but a section of it; how would they feel about that? Not a lot of benefits if you ask me. Now since these guys totally worshipped the Earth in itself, the Inuits, inexperienced politicians, who don't even know what the juice is going on, is forced to wear a tuxedo, and a tie, and start to act civilized, basically on their own. (Sarcasm alert is waking up the nation!)Yup, they are the happiest people on Earth .

Yea, Rohan, you...just...got...SERVED!
