How can we learn about gender roles in society and sports from this text. Please use proof from the text to support your thoughts. Make sure you are continuing to add onto others and responding to their posts.
From the story "The Marble champ" we can all learn that the male gender and female gender are important roles in society and sports form this text. We usually know boys as best at sports because they are sporty and more energetic. But in the story one can infer that any gender can be best at everything and you should try to do the best. Lupe was so bad at sports at the beginning of the story but when she tried hard she became a fan of sports by winning the marble game. We know girls as lazy, calm, and sympathetic but we have to know that anyone can make a difference in the world. This story shows us girls are important in the society as boys are because they both learn up in the same age and tend to do the same things together. This makes me realize that it doesn't matter if it is a boy gender or a girl gender because they know a lot of logic as girls. We can't judge someone on their gender but one can always know that life isn't always about how "cool" someone is bet their actions.
We can learn about gender roles in society and sports from the text. In my opinion,I think that all genders are good in sports because if they try hard enough, they will be able to win that sport. In the text, there was girls in the 50 yard dash. In basketball in school, boys know more of basketball then girls. If girls wanted to do better, they could and maybe ask boys for tips.Girls can be good at a sports that boys aren't as good at them. The other way around is also true.
From the story "The Marble champ" I can know that male are not as great a sport player than a femle, because menjust alway have confidence, and never really tries. However, girls orfemales on the other hand, are not confident until they hve tried so many times. for example, a male or a boy might be in a soccer team and they are in the championship. The boy, after tryinghard, decides to not practice, cause he is so confident that he will make it, and then when the game comes, he forgets how to play, and misses every shot. i now, cause i am a boy myself. A girl however, like Lupe, tries, tries, tries, tries, tries, tries, tries, tries, tries, and tries, until it is the day of the thing. Then, because of the hardwork, the girl gets the winning medal, or trophy, just like Lupe. Also, in a second thought, it doesnt matter of genders. I think t matters of how hard someone tries, until something comes. I think there is no difference in genders, now tht i think of it. know myself, that if a girl tries, ad a boy tries, one will win. There is never just gender that is good at something, while the other gender is not.
"The Marble Champ" lets us learn about gender roles in society and sports from this text. For example, in the story, when Lupe got past the girls competition, she went on to the boys marbling competition. This means that she was better then the boys, and that boys and girls are the same, it just depends on the person. A lot of people think that boys are better in sports then girls, and that girls are better in other stuff. We can learn that in society, in depends on the person for whether they work hard on something or not. It'll be stereotyping like Kazi said. In the story, Lupe worked hard on practicing on the competition, and won the competition. We could learn that everyone is different, and that everyone in reality accomplish different things. This tells me that gender roles don't really matter when it comes to accomplishments, sports, pretty much society. ~Efat
kazi said in class, it depends on the person but not the gender. When i heard this, in my mind i wanted to say i beg to differ with you because i think boys are still better than girls in sports. I think this because marbles isnt even a sport! even mr.alper said that! If she was in something like the baskestball tournement, she would lose easilly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-shaqib alam
Both males and females are important because both genders can do good things in the marble champ, Lupe was a marble champ like her brother which means both genders can be good at one sport. Just because you are a boy doesn't mean you are better than a girl because Lupe beat many boys inthe boys marble championship. I beg to differ Lamiya because some people think boys as fat kids.
I JUST WANT TO YELL AT YOU SHAQIB. THERE IS SUCH THING AS A MARBLE SPORT. I SEARCHED IT UP, AND THE BOOK WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think we can learn about gender roles in society and sports in the text that all genders are equal, but boys tend to be better at sports but if we try, we can succeed like Lupe did. In the story, it says how Lupe beat the Marble Champ and her brother, who were both boys. This makes me think that maybe girls have grown up believing in one role for them and that's why boys tend to be better at sports. Also, when Lupe beat all the girls in the Marble Championship, I think this happened because she was the one who practiced and didn't care about her gender and was determined to be good at one sport. In addition to that, Lupe beat all the boys to, which makes me realize that the gender roles in our society are equal, but we all are following a belief that isn't true without realizing it. As Abdulla said, all of us can be good at sports and that we all can be equal, but we never just try to be equal.
I beg to differ with your argument because it SEEMS like girls are worse at sports, but that's because we all grew up differently, and maybe some girls grew up not playing sports, so they don't play them. Shaqib, you can't believe something like that, because in the text Lupe was a girl and still beat both boys and girls in the Marble Championship. Even though marbles may not be a sport, maybe in that school marbles are counted as a sport.
Some people may think that boys are better at sports than girls (hint hint Shaqib) however I believe that it does not matter about our gender roles in society and sports. In the book "The Marble Champ" Lupe beat the BOYS and the GIRLS in the story. In fact she tried hard and even beat her brother in practice when she was playing marbles. From this many can infer that the girls are the same as boys in generalize because we both share the same world and in advance we also have siblings that are a different gender form us. At the beginning of the story I thought that Lupe was a loser because the boys and the girls beat her at the sports but soon realized that anyone can make a difference in a life.I also beg to differ with your argument Tazrean because if in gym a girl misses a shot during the game of basketball we can't say anything bad about it because it's not that everyone can get the ball in the hoop. This help shows that one can't take disadvantage that girls seem to be bad at sports because it's not like that you a grant a wish and it comes true. In gender situations the male and the female can both be sore in sports but we can't laugh at them because everyone has a different personality. Both gender roles in society and sports from this text are important because they help out the community and tend to have a lot in common.
I mistakely deleted my comment, so i am going to write it, and my new comment as well. Thank you Lamiya. Adding on, Lupe did beat all the boys and girls in the story. Also, like I said, 'From the story "The Marble champ" I can know that male are not as great a sport player than a femle, because menjust alway have confidence, and never really tries. However, girls orfemales on the other hand, are not confident until they hve tried so many times. for example, a male or a boy might be in a soccer team and they are in the championship. There is never just gender that is good at something, while the other gender is not.' girls and boys hae no difference in sports. A lousy and lazy person can wn someting if that person tries, tries, tries, tries, and tries. So, it has no differense in genders. At class, now that i think of it, i wanted to say that i thought Lupe was going to win, because i know that when a story starts, a story ends, and this kind of story, is a story that should stop with a good happy ending, not that some stories like this do. But, this is not something what Mr. Alper told us to ewrite, because he wrote'How can we learn about gender roles in society and sports from this text. Please use proof from the text to support your thoughts. Make sure you are continuing to add onto others and responding to their posts.' I had enough of adding on, because ther is nothing i can add on for or to. I think genders in society and sports, becausei know i am a boy and i dont want to hurt boys, and my mom and my sister are both girls, so i dont want to hurt them, so all genders are same. ~Nur Rohan Siddique
i concur with the last 5 words nur said . also ,if u think about it , both , males and females are good at sports and at gym . if u try hard enough you can become good at any sport too . after all , practice makes perfect
Nur, I can concur with you because all genders are the same. However, I would like to add on that in sports, like Syed said, some girls could be better then boys and some boys better then girls. This makes me realize it depends on the person itself, not gender because if there was a very athletic girl(like Lupe, for instance) who would win against other boys, that shows that we can be good at one thing but maybe not another since boys may be good at sports, but girls may be good at another.
Also, Lamiya, I'm not saying what you think I am, I'm saying that Lupe most likely beat the other girls because she believed sports wasn't only for boys and knew that she could try out. In the story, I notice how the boy that Lupe beat, who was supposed to be very good at marbles, said that Lupe would beat all the girls, but not the boys. I think he said this maybe because he thought that Lupe wouldn't be able to beat the boys because she was a girl.
I concur with everyone except for Shaquib because in the Olympics many people won medals vboth women and men also Shaquib you are wrong boys are good and girls are too ok? shaquib you don't have proof that girls are less good than boys also both women and men break world records too!!!!!!!!!!! Shaquib you are wrong have proof everybody use prompts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shaquib you have a opinion but you don't have PROOF YOU NEED PROOF WITHOUT PROOF YOU COULDN'T PROVE YOUR OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In Marbles lupe won the marbles challenge. This shows that girls can be good at sports too not only boys. The gender of the person doesn't matter it matters how good that person is. Girls can be champions and so can boys. Lupe tried out for marbles and so did her brother from previous years so the gender doesn't matter it matters on the person.
i think that "the marble champ" by Gary Soto shows us that it doesn't matter about your gender, as long as you play. Videlicet, I mean that if you WANT to be good in sports you can. in the story, Lupe was able to whoop the guy. This shows us that there are a few biological differences between a boy and a girl. i can also remember about the girls' division finalist. she would have beaten the boys with ease. i also want to give an example from real life, not marbles however. in tennis, Novak Djokovic, who is ranked no. 1 in all categories, and legend Serena Williams who was named no. 1 in a bunch of occasions in singles. Both are different genders, both no.1 in something. Look at Michael Jordan and Chamique Holdsclaw. Both have awe striking basketball skills, showing us both genders are basically the same in sports.
i thnk that the marble champ tells us that neither girls or boys are better at sports because girls are just as good boys in sports.i think this because lupe beat her brother easily when it came to marbles and her brother was a good marble player.
In the book "The Marble Champ" by Gary Soto we can learn that both genders have an impact in society and sports from this text. Lupe was very poor in sports and the only thing that she was very good at was studies. In general, many think that boys are better at sports than girls because many girls are calm and not very serious about sports. When Lupe tried very hard to succeed she won the marble champ against the boys and the girls. This help proves that it doesn't matter what a gender's role is based upon the society and environment. Back then the female gender were known as housewives and taking care of the children as of men were out at the wars. as of today the men and women go against each other in the Olympics, have jobs to do, and follow the same learning. This shows that it can take anything to become "great" at something because anyone can accomplish anything in their lives. We long for the ones that made our society better and most of them are women. Yes, Lupe may not be great at sports but when she won the marble champ and beat the other kids she finally was better in something dealing with sports. One cam make a huge difference in the society, environment, and the world even if ti deals with the simplistic things in our world.
I think that genders don't matter when it comes to skill on doing social stuff and/or sports; I think that it depends on the people. For example, if another girl was Lupe, she would've probably given up on the first day; but Lupe didn't give up no matter how discouraged she felt at first (by her mother and father).
From the story "The Marble Champ," We can learn that male and female genders are important in the society and in sports. Some people might think that men are better than women or vice versa. In my opinion, this is not true because in the story, Lupe was a girl and she was good at marbles just like her brother and neighbor. This proves that since she is a girl, both girls and boys are equal in all ways. As well as from this, Abdulla said, " In basketball in school, boys know more of basketball then girls." This is completely wrong. If any of you has ever heard of Lisa Leslie, the first women basketball player to do a dunk, no one would be able to compete with that since she was the first. All in all, the statement about boys better than women or vice versa is completely wrong.
I accede with Abdulla Mohammed and Tazrean when they say,"All of us can be good at sports and that we all can be equal, but we never just try to be equal," because girls and boys both want to prove that they are better. I admit that in my life, some girls can be better than boys and some boys can be better than girls. That is a fact. (Note: I am a boy. I also read the story here in Califonia.)
i concur with you Shaqib because it is true that boys are better than girls in a few sports like basketball but occasional (I said occasionally so don't get me wrong) girls can beat boys at some sports like crossword puzzles. to add on, i think that we learned that male and female genders are very important considering the fact that sometimes, girls ask boys for help in sports and boys ask girls for help in sports. Also, people like Lupe might be bad at one sport but might actually be good at another one, even though I don't count marbles as a sport.

~Afm Khan
Afm, I actually clash(beg to differ) with your argument because girls can be good at any sports. It doesn't have to be the sports that the boys don't get it can BE ANY SPORTS. See you guys always think that you are the best at everything but you are not even the females are the best at sports. For example in the story "The Marble Champ" by Gary Soto Lupe was really bad at sports not to mention that she couldn't race the fifty yard dash. That doesn't mean that girls are the failure at sports though, don't get the wrong idea. She eventually succeed in the champ. From this one can also tell that practice makes a man perfect because no matter how hard Lupe practiced with such a sore thumb she still made it through the marble champ. We can learn about gender roles in society and sports from the text that both genders can be best at everything because it's what they are used to. That doesn't mean that the boys have more knowledge and the girls are ignorant, it means that one can try to be the best at everything and claim that idea. €© 2013®™
