Look at the image and think carefully about what you see. Don't forget to ask yourself: What's going on in this picture? What do I see that makes me say that? What more can I find? Remember to also respond to the person who posted before you.

I see Washington probably sailing to new land. I see Washington looking to land and it looks like they're heading there. Washington's men are maybe trying to point the ship to the new land or they are trying to break the ice because, as I said before, maybe their stuck... Kayla

Kayla, it's more likely possible that they aren't sailing into new lands because they are not carrying huge sacks with them and no one there is even eager to possibly go tot that land. I think that in the picture George Washington and the Patriots (or the troops you never know) are going to battle because General George Washington is himself wearing the uniforms and maybe the flag represents freedom of the battle. Kayla, it also does look like that they are heading towards that land but where do you see that in the picture. When you go to a new land you'd possibly need the things in order to live in house. They may have some supplies along with them in the sacks but its only because of the battles that they are going to face. I think that George Washington and his troops are heading towards the land for the battle because in the picture, I can see that the people's are face are not eager to face the battle and George Washington is also wearing his uniform and some battles use uniforms to fight so they know which team one is from. I also see that in the picture that their are hundreds of men following after the boat that George Washington is. This makes me realize that it must be tough for them because they are out ion the cold but they have to proceed to a land for a battle because of their freedom.I can also find in the picture that the men aren't eager to go to war because their face look tired and the men are having hard time pushing the icebergs away so that they can approach the land for battling. This makes me think that we wouldn't have our own freedom if ti weren't for George Washington and his troops because they went to battle so we could have our own freedom and piece of land. There are many things to learn from back then especially knowing why we have our own freedom.

What more can you find Kayla? Whwhat what I found, was that there is a man who is stabbing his foot on some icebergs, and he isnot giving up. It looks as if George Washington is selling to the mountain in the left side of the left corner. What makes me say this, is that if you look close by zooming in, you will see a foot stabbing on a iceberg.

I see horseson a boat and I think the horses are going to be ridden by miltias because during the THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR Troops rode horses to warn people or to attack Loyalists. Also I think it is windy because one man is holding his hat and a lso there are clouds.

I concur with you Lamiya because George Washington has a sword and the Patriots have guns

I think in the picture whatever they are doing, they are desperate. They have weird, struggling faces, and as Kayla said, they are kind of stuck and they are not giving up.
also im shaqib, my account got hacked, sisters account in us right now

The Whatever Girl said...

I beg to differ with you Kayla because they're not stuck, you can see that they are rowing in the boat and struggling. I already know that George Washington and the Patriots must be going to another war, but they look worn out as if they already have been to many battles, and weakly are rowing to another war. I see how their bodies are slumped over and their worry expressions which makes me think they're weak and because they have weapons, I think they must be going to another war. I don't think George Washington is leading his patriots to freedom or a free land because if they were, wouldn't their faces be happy and not weak? I also think it must be winter because of the icebergs and how cold the Patriots look. To add on to what you said Shaqib, they are working hard and look desperate, but I also want to add how they have looks of despair, as if they're dreading the new battle they have to fight, and only George Washington looks alive and sure of himself.

Well I concur with shaqib because they look very desperate to go to the land because in the left corner there is land and maybe they are sailing for freedom and that they want to get there eagerly. I see in the picture people sailing for freedom and George Washington leading them to freedom. I say this because they have the flag with them and there is many people with horses so maybe they are going to fight someone because they all have weapons. I can also see a man putting his foot on the ice because his ore is stuck in the ice. Alvy.

I took time writing that then Tazrean came on.

i can see that maybe they are having trouble in life and the icebergs show that. they are having a long face and maybe the icebergs show ho hard life must be for them.i also see that the dude with the beaver hat is clinging onto the flag and trying to hold onto it. This shows me that the man trusts into his nation and will try his best not to let it out of grasp and will make sure it stands. it's like when you hold onto your mom because then you are trying to grasp her not to fall. one more thing that i see is the land and how white it appears. i know on the American flag white stands for freedom and freedom is what they are heading for. also the land is bright there like there is hope for General Washington and his followers to be victors.

i think that George Washington is different according to this picture to regular people. what makes me say that is George has a sword, compared to guns, meaning that he doesn't need to shoot, he is so good he is close enough to stab.

F.A.N said...

rohan i beg to differ. IF you analyze the picture more clearly you'll actually see he si jabbing the glaciers . I see ON the far right there are people on horses stuck on ice. I wonder how they got there . Can anyone answer? -FAHIM

Unknown said...

Fahim, the sailors are jabbing the ice because they are stuck and their boat won't move. By the way Fahim, I think that there are also horses on the boats because remember a book that we read in fourth grade as a class a book. The girl used horses to alert the others that battles are happening. One the far right of the picture you may see a bunch of horses but those horses are there to help the troops get their supplies and alert others about the war

I think that the people are on horses and can't budge through the ice since the horses are getting wet and not moving. I also notice that they are following a canoe, which proves they are following no matter what. Lamiya, even though you are using your prior knowledge to answer this question, we have to interpret the picture so prior knowledge won't really help, unless it really has something to do with the picture.

Noorshifa, I agree with you. It looks like the men are following a canoe. It also looks like the waves are strong and they are struggling. Notice how the men look stressed, they are all making a serious face, perhaps because of the ice. They're scared that the canoe might get imbalanced.

Unknown said...

Sithi, I'm not using my prior knowledge but I am also using the picture to help me. I think that the horses are there to warn others in far lands because behind George Washington's boat there is a boat with two to three horses all packed up. Also Syed, if you look at the men's faces you'll see that they are not scared or all. Their faces are desperate in a way because they want to get out of the troubles. They are also a bit lazy because if you see at the end of the first boat the man is not even trying. The man in the middle of the picture is trying hard but with a gloomy look on his face. It's most likely that they are going for battle because they have horses and General George Washington is carrying a sword. There are many things to learn from the picture but we just have to look carefully.

In the picture I see a man who looks like a leader, using my prior knowledge I know that when someone is standing taller than others, odds are they are leaders or the most powerful person. I think this person is George Washington, I say this because for one thing I notice there is a flag with stars in a circular formation, meaning this probably takes place in the olden days of the colonists. I also see several people trying tot stick away the ice chunks floating on the water, this makes me think that life was difficult for colonists especially since they were on a frozen body of water, almost looking frustrated with all the chunks of ice everywhere. Something more that I can find is people in the background, maybe these people were other colonists who were planning to fight in the battle with Britain, George Washington probably was leading this big group of people

Unknown said...

Daijah, you're right about the part that the most important person in the group is taller than the other. Also Daijah why do you think that they are going to battle? What do you find in the picture? What I think is going on in the picture is that they are leading themselves into trouble which are the battles. I also think that the battle is going to be held in Valley Forge because if you look in the far left of the picture, you'll see that it's snowy with a lot of trees and it's true that Valley Forge is a snowy place. I also think that the men aren't determined because they have tired look on their faces and the men aren't even trying to pushing away the ice faster. This makes me realize that we should be grateful that we are living in the modern times because the land is all ours and we don't have to battle for our own freedom.

The Whatever Girl said...

Sithi, to add on to what you said, I think that they may be following the British or a canoe is following them, which tells us that either the Patriots are using stealth to fight the British, or they are leading other canoes which tells us they are the leader. To add on to what you said Daijah, I think maybe George Washington is leading his men to the war, urging them to keep going, while most of them are suffering because it is wintertime, and they have thin rags and less food expect firecake to read, and maybe they also ran out of supplies the French and Spanish gave them, which explains why they are so weak and frail, maybe because they are tired of the war. This reminds me of how in the world today, we can easily grow tired of things and that is what the picture may also be showing.

Unknown said...

i can tell that the picture is showing us how optimistic George Washington is when it comes to battling. everyone looks tired in the picture.but George Washington is looking proud and energetic. Maybe it shows how enthusiastic he is when it comes to battle. Maybe that is what the Patriots needed to win the battle. or maybe he just LOVES fighting. anyhow George Washington's traits led the soldiers to be victors. That is also what this painting be Emanuel Gottlieb shows us.

Unknown said...

I can also see that one of the men were black and is rowing what looks like regretfully. He is probably a slave and that shows me that the Patriots are not as innocent as it seems at first and that no one is pure at fault.

Unknown said...

i can also that man in the front is looking out hopefully showing us two things:
He is looking for the British.
He is looking for land that can lead to victory.
probably, he is anxious to get this over with because he is cold.

Unknown said...

i also see the ray of sunshine that is shining upon George Washington like he is the hope that the patriots need to win. he also is the one that made the difference, the MVP[Most Valuable Player(in this case "player" is soldier)]

F.A.N said...

Laymia i said that Nur Rohan didn't i was stating that.

Unknown said...

Shayan, how do you know that he is looking for the British. I also think that a ray of sunshine is only one General George Washington and no one else because if it weren't for him we would still be suffering with the consequences of our own freedom and land. In the picture, George Washington must stand for hope and freedom because the on other men there is a storm but on the leader there's a slight of sunshine.

The Whatever Girl said...

Shayan, I don't think he is looking for British, because that means he WANTS war. Although the Patriots were the ones who declared war, no one wants to fight and sought out war. I also beg to differ with you Shayan about George Washington looking for the British because I know that the Patriots use guerrilla to fight the Loyalists, which is basically surprise attacks, so it would make more sense for him to be looking out for the British, to see if they were going to use guerrilla on them.

I concur with you Daijha because since George Washington is standing up, he is most likely the leader and all the other people around him are sitting down so you can infer that they are a lower position than George Washington. To add on, I think that the flag is showing 13 stars, even though you can't see them all and I can infer this because I know that there were 13 colonies before. I beg to differ with you Sithi and Syed because I think that instead of them following the canoes, the canoes were following them instead.

I can see that george washington is taller than the rest of the peaople.from this I can guess that genaral george washington is supirior to everyone else. What makes me say this is that everyone is working hard and their face exprassions tell me that they are tired and Mr.Washington looks tall and strong and he looks like he's ready to lead them into battle.

Afsana Akter said...

I think is trying to say that G.W is like the leader in the battle, pretty much the most important person in the painting. He is the strongest and looks like he won't give up without a fight.
In this picture I can see that G.W is leading everyone into battle, and it looks like everyone else following him and in the boat is kind of worshiping/ pretty much awed by him. He's standing tall, while the others look weak. He has the flag, and that tells me that he is a big part of America/the 13 colonies.

In this painting like Nur said I see some men trying to break the icebergs. Some are trying with their paddles and some with their own feet but just trying to get it out of the way. I also see that Gorge Washington isn't the only one that is standing, i see that another man that has good clothing compared to the other men rowing the boat. This makes me think that this might have been one of gorge Washington's great and loyal servants. That is maybe hay he is wearing better cloths, standing instead of sitting and not busy steering the boat or just not in charge moving the boat. I also noticed that he has his head up high just like G.W.

In this painting the people are tired and facing through hardships. But they are still having determanation. I see that a symbol is that the more taller you are the more stronger. The place that is light and land is where probably they'll fight against england. The canoe they are on is probably the strongest since they closer you are the stronger.

Crossides said...

In this image i can see that they are in a cold place because there are icebergs and people in heavy clothes and i looks like there is snow on the land.

Unknown said...

i think its showing george washington and his men and the weather is not going easy on them because there is ice everywhere and people are trying to break the ice and george is like the leader and this is representing that they have faith and they are not giving up and slowly traveling to new land because there is some land around the back and they are going into battle because some people are holding the american flag usally that represents like your country and i think they are representing america and fighting for america like in the american revolution

Afm Khan said...

I concur with you prithila but to add on, I think that George Washington is facing a challenge and he is going through this hardship because he knows that in the end, there will be a happiness for all this struggling. Also, if you look closely, there is a light shining from the clouds and I think that might be the light of heaven, guiding George Washington to victory
